🌳 FACTUAL FRIDAY 🌳

By Charlie Elphinstone
After 4 years at Strichen & New Pitsligo Antiques, I’ve learnt a lot about timber — and definitely picked a few favourites! 🪵
Here are 5 beautiful woods you might spot in our shops:
🖤 COROMANDEL — Dark, dramatic grain and once considered a luxury Victorian timber. Today, Coromandel Ebony is protected due to historic over-harvesting.
🪑 MAHOGANY — A rich hardwood with a fascinating history, including its links to the transatlantic slave trade.
🌳 BURR ELM — Created by unusual growths on elm trees and prized for its durability and distinctive grain.
⚫ EBONY — Exceptionally hard and famously dark, ebony has been prized for thousands of years — but many species now face conservation concerns.
🌹 ROSEWOOD — Loved for its rich colour and beautiful grain, but several species are now subject to international trade restrictions.
And that’s just 5! You’ll also find antiques made from pine, oak, teak, walnut, satinwood, camphor wood and many more. 🌲🌳
Next time you’re looking at an antique, take a closer look at the timber — it can tell you a fascinating story about the piece.
