Cyaak, a Buchan planned village

Lace, granite and peat.

Founded
1787, by Sir William Forbes
Local name
Cyaak
Famous for
New Pitsligo lace
Industry
Granite quarrying and peat cutting

New Pitsligo was founded in 1787 by Sir William Forbes on the site of an existing hamlet, Cyaak, a name locals still use today. It grew into the largest planned village in the North East of Scotland.

The village was famous for its fine New Pitsligo lace, which became fashionable around the world. Many villagers worked in the granite quarries, and others cut peat on the moss between New Pitsligo and Strichen: the same moss you cross driving between our two shops.
