The artwork shows a pensive Mary Stuart seated at a table with an open book, resting her head on her hand.It is a mezzotint and etching originally based on a painting by John Graham, later engraved by George Dawe.The scene is set in Fotheringhay Castle, where the queen spent her final moments before her execution in 1587.
