Artist Mike Cairncross was born in Leith Scotland 1958. Mike had a keen interest in Painting and sculpting from a young age. He trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design Dundee University.
The original painting by Sir James Guthrie, was created in 1883. It depicts a young girl, likely the daughter of a farm laborer (a "hind"), standing in a cabbage field.
The painting focuses on the everyday life of rural Scotland, a departure from the traditional themes of the time. It shows the girl with a knife, possibly to harvest the cabbages, and holding a large leaf.
Guthrie was part of the "Glasgow Boys," a group of artists who aimed to portray ordinary people and rural life. The painting is considered an example of naturalism, emphasizing the accurate depiction of the subject in their natural environment.
Guthrie painted this work in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, during the winter. The bare trees in the background suggest the cold conditions.
The painting is notable for its realistic portrayal of a young girl in a working-class setting, a subject not commonly depicted in Scottish art at the time. The girl's direct gaze at the viewer adds to the impact of the piece.
"A Hind's Daughter" is currently housed in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh
