Captain John Gell (1738–1806) was a British Royal Navy officer who commissioned a portrait by Gilbert Stuart in 1785. Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Captain John Gell was painted in 1785, shortly after Gell's completion of duty on the 70-gun ship Monarca. The portrait, titled "Captain John Gell," is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Remarque is a technique where artists add hand-painted elements on top of a printed canvas.
