Fischel was founded in 1871 by David Gabriel Fischel in Czechoslovakia, after the patents held by Michael Thonet for the bentwood process expired. Fischel became a major competitor to Thonet.
Like Thonet, Fischel chairs are made from steam-bent beech wood. Many Fischel chairs, including the one in the image, feature a pressed or embossed plywood seat with a decorative pattern.
Chairs from Fischel often have a manufacturer's label or stamp on the underside of the seat, which can help in dating and authenticating the piece.
