The Broons and Oor Wullie! Factual Friday
FACTUAL FRIDAY 🇬🇧🏴
This week we look at two much-loved icons of Scottish comic history — The Broons and Oor Wullie!
The Broons first appeared in The Sunday Post in 1936, created by writer R. D. Low and artist Dudley D. Watkins. Their humorous stories and working-class Scottish characters quickly became firm favourites with readers.
Oor Wullie, created by the same duo, followed shortly afterwards and became another Scottish institution.
During WWII, paper shortages meant that no Broons or Oor Wullie annuals were produced, with jigsaw puzzles produced instead.
Today, original early Broons annuals are highly sought after by collectors, with some examples valued at ÂŁ5,000+, while later reprints are generally much less valuable.
To celebrate Oor Wullie’s 80th anniversary in 2016, 55 colourful Oor Wullie sculptures appeared around Dundee before being auctioned for charity. In 2019, more than 200 sculptures appeared across Scotland in another charity fundraising event.
🇬🇧 A fascinating piece of Scottish cultural history — and a great addition to any collection.
